Dawgs heal -- and heel

In sharp contrast to last week's feckless performance against LSU, the Dawgs took their frustration out on the Portland State Vikings this week, pounding them, 52-13, in front of 54,922 fans at CenturyLink Field, Seattle, Washington.

"We're still trying to find our identity on offense," head coach Steve Sarkisian was quoted after the LSU game. "What we're going to be. Who we're going to be on the offensive side of the ball, so that we can find some continuity. Obviously it was tough for us to get that tonight. There are things we have to fix and fix quickly."

Apparently, the Huskies fixed things quickly: Bishop Sankey ran for 103 yards and 2 touchdowns on 14 carries, QB Keith Price threw for 181 yards and 3 touchdowns, and TE  Austin Seferian-Jenkins caught 5 passes for 78 yards and 1 touchdown.

"I would like to think our psyche is improved," Sarkisian was quoted as saying. "I don't know if it is exactly where it needs to be. That stuff, it's a lot easier for me to gauge through the week as we get back going.

"I do believe in some areas we are still immature."

The Huskies got well (healed) but, interestingly, were chewed out (heeled) on the sidelines at the half by Sarkisian for sloppy play. Angrily slamming his visor to the turf, coach Sark did an imitation of former coach Keith Gilbertson, at a few of the practices I witnessed, to the dismay of his startled troops -- after all they were up by 45 points.

"I guess I didn't expect it," Justin Glenn said. "But that's fine. That's what coaches are supposed to do."

Glenn precipitated the lesson in "heeling" by hitting a Viking who was out of bounds after the Viking had run a kickoff back at the end of the second period. The out-of bounds hit drew a flag.

Oh, for the life of a football coach.

The Good, the Bad, the Ugly

The Good:

-- TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins caught 5 passes for 78 yards, leading all receivers on the night.

-- PSU's longest run from scrimmage: QB Kieran McDonagh's 21 yards.

-- Price's pass-efficiency rating of 205.81 was the third highest of his 16-game career at Washington.

-- Tre Watson's 79-yard blocked field goal return for TD, the one of which Shaq Thompson blocked.

-- Marcus Peters' 21 yard interception return for TD, i.e., both the special teams and defense got in to the scoring act.

-- TOP: 38:38

-- The Huskies limited the Vikings to 83 yards rushing

-- The Huskies scored 31 points in the second quarter, the most they have ever scored in any period in their recorded history.

The Bad:

-- No  touchbacks on 9 kickoffs.

-- No sacks registered on 34 pass attempts.

The Ugly:

-- Nevin Lewis's 70 yard TD pass from Kieran McDonagh

-- 9 penalties for 80  yards.

Last year's top-25 opponents annihilated the Dawgs on the ground. See Table 1 below.

Table 1. Last year's rush defense against top-25 teams bodes ominously for the Dawgs in 2012. Emboldened rows are from this year's defense.
