Huskies fight Déjà vu, beat Hawai'i, 40-32
Rich Linde, 11 September 2011

Jumping off to a 21-0 lead, the Washington Huskies held off a stubborn Hawai'i team to prevail victoriously, 40-32, at Husky Stadium in Seattle.

Like the mulish Eastern Washington Eagles from last week, the seemingly badly-beaten Warriors refused to throw in the towel, getting within 5 points, 31-26, with 13:42 left on the clock. For a moment it was Déjà vu all over again, mindful of the 2007 game in Hawaii when the Dawgs had taken an early 21-0 lead over the Warriors, only to lose 35-28.

Leading 38-26 with 4:34 to go and in possession of the ball on its own 25, Washington failed to maintain ball control, going three and out. (Also some Déjà vu from last week, in not being able to put a team away and close out the deal with a lead in hand). Punting rugby style, Kiel Rasp lined a kick that that hit a Warrior in the back, netting minus-5 yards. And the Warriors had the ball on the Huskies' 27 with 2:48 remaining.

Taking advantage of the bizarre punt, QB Bryant Moniz connected with Jeremiah Ostrowski on an 8-yard touchdown pass to narrow Washington's lead to 38-32 with 1:39 to go.

And then the unimaginable.

Everette Thompson blocked the try for point, his second blocked PAT of the day, and Desmond Trufant scooped the ball up and ran it back for two points to give the Huskies a 40-32 lead.

The Warriors' ensuing on-side kick rolled just inches short of the necessary 10 yards, and Price knelt twice in a row to run out the clock and put the painful memory of 2007 to bed once again.

Some questions were answered from last week. (Note that South Dakota beat Eastern Washington 30-17 on Saturday, arguably its loss justifying some of the criticism heaped on the lackadaisical Huskies after last week's narrow 30-27 win over the Eagles.)

Young QB Keith Price is the real deal. With coach Steve Sarkisian's protective wraps removed this week, Price gave an all-out performance, connecting on 18 of 25 passes for 315 yards and 4 touchdowns. His otherwise admirable showing was blemished by a pick-six, a 99-yard interception return, that narrowed Washington's lead to 21-14 in the second quarter.

Price's pass-efficiency rating on the season is an eye-popping 182.26. He has an accurate, strong arm, with athletic moves that translate into mobility and escape-ability. His decision making is excellent and he has good rapport with his teammates.

Washington's defense, particularly the secondary, is still open to question; however, the defense played better this week against a tougher opponent. Still the Warriors dinged UW for 333 yards passing, converted 11 of 14 third downs and won time of possession, 32:11 to 27:49. The Huskies held the Warriors to 55 yards rushing.

UW's Chris Polk rushed for 107 yards.

Erik Folk connected on a 36-yard field goal, his one try for the day, and had one touchback out of 7 kickoffs, his two touchbacks this season matching his total from all of last season. He averaged 65 yards on kickoffs, with the Huskies netting 38.9 yards.
