The purple screen of death

Autzen Stadium, Eugene, Oregon.  My TV went on the fritz during the Washington game with Oregon. All I saw were flashes of green and yellow; then my screen would freeze, displaying nothing but purple, like in the blue screen of death.

Thanks to Oregon's hurry-up offense and Washington's sluggish play at times that's what it seemed like anyway. A lightning fast Oregon team won 52-21, turning 4 of 5 Husky turnovers into touchdowns, beating Washington for the ninth straight time.

Another TV rerun. And it's the Fall Season?

UW quarterback Keith Price had a non-stellar night passing, throwing two interceptions, one a pick-six that gave the Ducks a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. His passing efficiency rating on the game was a mediocre 87.68, which combined with his others this season makes for an overall rating of 111.76. The Huskies rank 109th in the nation in passing efficiency offense.

"No excuse. I can't make bonehead decisions," Price was quoted as saying.

"I'm pressing too hard."

Oregon's first touchdown came off a fumbled punt (Marvin Hall's) recovery; blown pass coverage led to its second; and the pick-six to its third. A fumble recovery in the fourth quarter led to another Oregon score.

Price's fumble in the second quarter stopped a UW drive and gave Oregon another touchdown and its 35-7 halftime lead.

"We didn't make it hard on them," UW cornerback Desmond Trufant was quoted as saying. "We made it easy for them and you can't do that with a good team."

Remember when coach Steve Sarkisian lectured his troops, who were gathered around him, at halftime during the game with Portland State. Justin Glenn precipitated the scolding by the late hit he made on a kickoff run back near the end of the second period which drew a flag for a personal foul.

The players forgot to take notes during Sark's lecture. Last night the Huskies were flagged 8 times for 102 yards, with three penalties being of the personal foul variety.

In his fourth season at UW, Coach Steve Sarkisian (22-21) has been on a mission to rebuild the Huskies from their 0-12 season in 2008. So far the journey has been somewhat successful, but for his team's appearances against ranked teams the last two seasons, when it has been unable to stop the run. Against then second-ranked LSU this year, the Huskies were torched for 242 yards on the ground. Against second-ranked Oregon, 299.

The Good, the Bad, the Ugly

The Good:

-- The Huskies rushed for 208 yards, Bishop Sankey accumulating 104 yards with two touchdown runs.

-- 8 of 15 third-down conversions.

The Bad:

-- Too many penalties

-- Posting just 21 points

The Ugly:

-- Price's passing efficiency on the game; his pick-six.

-- Too many turnovers.

Last year's top-25 opponents annihilated the Dawgs on the ground. See Table 1 below.

Table 1. Last year's rush defense against top-25 teams bodes ominously for the Dawgs in 2012. Emboldened rows are from this year's defense.
