Mistakes hound Dawgs

CenturyLink Field, Seattle. Crippled by four turnovers, a blocked punt, and a feckless offense, the Washington Huskies were beaten, 24-14, by the 11th ranked USC Trojans.

"I can't turn the ball over," UW quarterback Keith Price was quoted as saying, with respect to his two fumbles and two interceptions." I just can't. ... There were plays where I just tried to do too much and it cost my team, and it cost my team a loss."

It wasn't all Price's fault, whose passing efficiency was a respectable 140.11 on the night. The Huskies' offense was held to just six total yards in the second quarter and faired miserably on the ground, posting just 101 yards rushing. Meanwhile, Troy ran for 204 yards, with RB Silas Redd accumulating 155 of them, including a 57-yard touchdown run.

USC scored the first two times it had the ball to take a 10-0 lead. Redd scored the second one following an interception of Price by USC linebacker Dion Bailey.

The Trojans led 24-7 at the half, following a blocked punt return by Anthony Brown.

Troy accumulated just 138 yards and failed to get a first down on four of seven drives in the second half.

"I continue to remind myself that there's one goal and that's to win the game," USC coach Lane Kiffin was quoted as saying. "Are the numbers what we're used to? No. But we won.

"So yeah, we played conservative once we got a lead like that. We said it all along this isn't about numbers or Heismans or any of that. This is about winning games and we did the best thing to win the day."

In the final analysis, though, the Huskies' four turnovers were their Waterloo.

In his fourth season at UW, Coach Steve Sarkisian (22-22) has been on a mission to rebuild the Huskies from their 0-12 season in 2008. So far the journey has been somewhat successful, but for his team's appearances against ranked teams the last two seasons, when it has been unable to stop the run. Against then second-ranked LSU this year, the Huskies were torched for 242 yards on the ground. Against second-ranked Oregon, 299, and now eleventh-ranked USC 204.

The Good, the Bad, the Ugly

The Good:

-- Price's passing efficiency and his 16-straight completions.

The Bad:

-- Posting just 14 points

-- Price's willingness to shoulder all the blame

The Ugly:

-- Four turnovers

-- Just 101 yards rushing, while allowing 204.

-- Offensive line play.

Last year's top-25 opponents annihilated the Dawgs on the ground. See Table 1 below.

Table 1. Last year's rush defense against top-25 teams bodes ominously for the Dawgs in 2012. Emboldened rows are from this year's defense.
