From an acorn a mighty oak tree grows
Bob Toledo looking for acorns in TO

Leaving
the cool summer behind in Camarillo, with its omnipresent ocean breezes, we
found a warm a summer day--just 15 miles up the grade in the city of Thousand
Oaks. Under the sun and much
scrutiny, Bob Toledo’s Bruins basked in the warmth of TO at their Cal
Lutheran University training camp.

Losing 23 seniors from last season, eleven
of them starters, Toledo will plant eleven acorns and hope they turn into
mighty oaks trees before the season opener with Colorado State on September
7th.
Toledo’s immediate future may be inextricably woven with
his quarterback Cory Paus, who has had a history of injuries during his career
at UCLA. If Paus should go down, head helmsman duty falls to redshirt freshman
John Sciarra, who had a binary spring game--one that was off and on. Loaded with talent, Sciarra will need some playing time to develop as a
quarterback. He wore number 15, and as I
remember, his dad wore that number when he played for the Bruins a few years
back.
Paus threw the ball crisply and
accurately in practice, as did Matt Moore (6-4, 180) and Drew Olsen (6-2, 188). Olsen, the freshman
sensation from Piedmont, was particularly impressive.
TE Matt Seidman
(6-5, 254) was hauling in
everything conceivably catchable, and repeatedly drew applause from the Bruin
fans in attendance. Mercedes Lewis (below) is a stud, no other way to put it.
What
was I doing at a UCLA training camp at Thousand Oaks? Mmm, just catchin' some
sun and a football jones. BTW, Cory
Paus, Casey's brother, is a darn nice kid.
