Peterson & Thompson carry-okies
UW's second-half performance off-tune
Malamute, 19 September 2006

Paul Thompson's touchdown pass and Adrian Peterson's two touchdown runs led an Oklahoma surge in the second half, as the Sooners pulled away from Washington, mostly coasting to a 37-20 victory at Norman, Oklahoma.

It was all knotted at the intermission, 13-13, and it looked like the Huskies had a chance to win. However, on the first possession of the second half, Thompson  found Malcolm Kelly racing down the right side for a 35-yard touchdown, and the Sooners took a 20-13 lead that they eventually widened with 17 unanswered points.

On the first play from scrimmage RB Kenny James bolted up the middle on a 54-yard touchdown run, which shocked the partisan crowd and gave UW an early 7-0 lead. With 5:46 left in the first quarter, Thompson combined with Kelly on a 7-yard TD to knot the score.

The teams traded a pair field goals in the second quarter, but the third quarter was Washington's undoing as it surrendered 17 points. After Oklahoma scored its final touchdown in the fourth quarter, Carl Bonnell, who replaced starting quarterback Isaiah Stanback, led the Huskies on a 6-play, 63 yard scoring drive, capped by a 2-yard pass from Bonnell to Sonny Shackelford that ended the scoring.

At the same time Peterson and Thompson electrified the crowd with their carry-okie in the second half, Washington came out mostly flat, on-key and then off-key. Following a blocked UW punt, Hartley kicked a 30-yard field goal to give OU a 23-13 lead in the third quarter. But then Chris Stevens forced a Thompson fumble on the OU four-yard line, which was recovered by Scott White. On the next play, Stanback fumbled the ball away.

"If you cash that in, it's a totally different ball game," said coach Tyrone Willingham (per The Seattle Times).

Highlights:

A school record 82-yard punt by Sean Douglas

Kenny James 54-yard TD run, highlighted by a spin through a defender's arms, which came on UW's first play from scrimmage.

The offensive line: 204 yards rushing

Carl Bonnell's TD drive. Although Bonnell has a quicker release than Stanback, Stanback needs to continue as the starter.

UW was in the game up until Stanback's fumble in the third quarter.

LB Scott White's play. Yeah, I know, one of Rick Neuheisel's soft recruits, along with Sean Douglas, Bonnell and Stanback and a host of other talented Huskies. :)

Low-lights:

Stanback's passing efficiency: 93.98

Stanback's fumble on the four-yard line

UW gave up punt returns of 75 yards and kick returns of 53 yards

Douglas's blocked punt.

Stanback's rushing total: 12 rushes, 18 yards.

UW's defensive secondary looked porous at times -- but looked better than it did against San Jose State.
